1 The short version
If you are here to find a coupon, we do not ask who you are. There is no shopper account, no sign-up, no newsletter and no way to give us your email address, because we have no use for it. You can browse a town, open an offer, print it, share it and walk into the shop without telling us anything about yourself.
If you run a business, a charity, or you give to a city, you have an account and we hold what running it requires: your name, your business, how to reach you, and what you have paid. We never sell any of it.
2 What we collect from visitors
We do not collect names, email addresses, telephone numbers or postal addresses from people browsing coupons, and we do not offer a way to provide them.
We record what happens on a page so that a business can be told how its listing performed: that a town page was viewed, that an offer was opened, printed, shared or scanned from a printed code, and that a link to a merchant’s own website was followed. Each record holds the event, the business and offer it relates to, the town, the page that referred you, and a random identifier stored in your browser as described below. It does not hold your name, because we do not have it.
These records are kept for ninety days and then deleted. What remains after that is a monthly count per business, which is a number rather than a history: it cannot be traced back to a person, a device or a visit.
We may hold a rough location from your network connection, used to put nearby towns first. It is not stored against you, and you can type a town or postal code instead.
3 Cookies and similar storage
We use no advertising cookies, no third-party trackers and no cross-site advertising identifiers. The cookies we set are first-party and each does one job:
- A visitor identifier. A random value with no name attached, used to avoid counting the same person twice in a business’s numbers and to stop a page being counted every time it is refreshed. Clearing your cookies removes it and nothing follows you.
- Your town, when you choose one. So the site opens where you last were rather than asking again.
- Precise location, when you grant it. Held in your browser for near-me sorting; you can withdraw it in your browser at any time.
- Sign-in, for people with accounts. A session identifier for a business, a charity or our own staff. Signing out ends it.
- Signup progress. While a business is filling in the signup, so a half-finished form is not lost, and a charity’s referral code when one has been scanned, so the right organization is credited.
Blocking cookies leaves the site usable: you will be asked for your town more often, and a business’s visit counts become less exact.
4 What we collect from businesses, charities and donors
For a business: the contact name, email address and telephone number you give us, the business name, address, category, description, artwork and offers you publish, and the record of what you have been charged.
For a 501(c)(3) organization: the legal and public names, the EIN, the contact person and their details, the address, the written appeal you publish, and the record of the checks and paperwork behind the arrangement — the exempt-status verification, the signed agreement, the Form W-9 and the payout account status.
For a business giving to a city: the contact details you provide, the amount, and the page you publish.
Card details are not among them. Payments are taken by Stripe on Stripe’s own pages, and we never see or store a card number. What we hold is Stripe’s reference for the customer, the subscription or the payment, the amount, and whether it succeeded.
5 Why we hold it, and on what basis
To run the service you asked for: publishing a listing, taking a payment, paying a charity, and letting you sign in. To meet legal obligations, including tax records and the filings some states require of businesses that raise money for charity. To keep the service safe and working, including preventing fraud and abuse. And to answer you when you write to us.
We do not build advertising profiles, we do not do behavioural advertising, and we do not sell or share personal information for money or for anyone else’s marketing. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
6 Who else sees it
Our suppliers, each for one job and under contract: Amazon Web Services hosts the site and its database in the United States; Stripe takes payments and handles charity payouts; our email provider delivers sign-in links, receipts and service notices; and a model provider assists with drafting a coupon when a business asks it to, receiving only what that business typed.
A charity is told which businesses fund it — the name, the town and whether it is paying — because that is what it is being paid for. It is never shown a business’s account, contacts, card or coupons. A business is never told which other businesses fund the same charity.
We may disclose information where the law requires it, to protect people or the service, or as part of a sale or reorganisation of the business, in which case the same protections continue to apply.
7 How long we keep it
Visitor event records: ninety days, then deleted, leaving monthly counts that identify nobody.
Account records: while the account exists and afterwards for as long as tax, accounting and legal obligations require. A cancelled business’s pages and coupons are taken off the public site and kept so that a business returning finds its own work; a request to delete them is honoured as described below.
Charity records, including the verification and the agreement: kept for the period the applicable state and federal rules require of a charitable sales promotion.
8 Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to or restrict a use, to receive it in a portable form, and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of them. Where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Ask through toplocalcoupons.com/contact or at info@lpraudit.com. We will verify the request proportionately — for an account, from the address on that account — and answer within the time the applicable law allows.
For a visitor with no account, there is usually nothing to return: we hold no name, no address and nothing that identifies you, so a request for a copy of your data will truthfully come back empty. Clearing your browser’s cookies removes the random identifier described above.
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front. We honour browser opt-out signals where the law requires it.
9 Security
The site runs over HTTPS. The database is not reachable from the internet. Secrets are held in a managed secret store rather than in code. Everyone with an account of our own uses two-factor authentication. No system is perfect, and we will tell you and the relevant authority about a breach where the law requires it.
10 Where information is held
In the United States, in Amazon Web Services’ North Virginia region. If you are outside the United States and use the service, the information described here is processed there.
11 Changes
We will post a new version here with a new effective date, and give notice of a material change in a way appropriate to it. A change does not apply retroactively to information already collected under an earlier version in a way that reduces your rights.
